Castello Montauto Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2007

A grape once in steep decline, Vernaccia enjoyed a reversal of fortunes in the 1960s and was granted its own DOC in 1966. This is a graceful example displaying floral aromas and generoud, fleshy fruit on the palate with touches of fresh pear and herbs.

Castello Montauto Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2005

"A white wine that smells sweet but tastes dry; slightly spicy, à la Gewürztraminer." * * * 1/2 (Good-Fine)

Castello Montauto Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2003

"Shiny gold hue. Grassy scents of kiwi and chalk. Tart flavors of lemon and straw. Even more tart in the finish."

The Wine News - November, 2004

"Sincerely aromatic, with scents of lilac, wild flower and almond candy. All in all, the bouquet is anything but subtle, but it's still pretty. In the mouth, there's a ripe core of melon, papaya and spice, while the finish is big and smooth. Seems like the warm ’03 summer helped this wine out." 87

Wine Enthusiast - August, 2004

"In the renaissance Italian village of San Gimignano (the setting for the movie Tea With Mussolini), they make a unique white from an indigenous grape. While many of the wines produced here don't make it to America, one does. And that 2003 Castello Montaúto Vernaccia di San Gimignano is an excellent example of just how good this wine can be. With delicious fresh fruit flavor and a hint of almonds in the finish, it's a delightful summer repast."

Castello Montauto Vernaccia di San Gimignano 2002

"Montauto's version transcends the usual light-bodied, delicate profile of this grape. Perfumes of almond, citrus and lily of the valley don't prepare you for the rich, dried-fruit maturity in the mouth."

Jennifer Rosen - Rocky Mountain News - August, 2004

"Pleasant, with apple and honey character, medium body and a fresh finish." 87
